I think it’s very interesting that they follow the creeg culture of the obels ( or coins ) over their eyes. The obel is offered to the deceased in which the passing of te Charon . Unable to pay the Charon a coin the soul remains wandering the shores for 1000 years or until he take pity upon them. I’m a funeral science major just wanted to throw that info in there also for anyone iterested

alright.. i’m a huge fan of the movie.. I recently heard this song… it starts with the whole prayer.. AND SHEPARDS WE WILL BE.
FOR THEE, MY LORD, FOR THEE.
POWER HATH DESCENDED FORTH FROM THY HAND yada yada yada.. “bang bang” then goes into this crazy song.. i was wondering if anyone had heard of that song.. and knows the title.. and or the artist of the song.

Alright for the record, most people who have commented on questions of Latin translations, as well as asking when people speak Latin in the movie, are completely ignorant. Seriously people, do you not pay attention in school or for that matter in life. I’m sorry but this movie should have a warning label, “unless you are Catholic(which I am Irish-Catholic, to be more precise) do not watch this movie because you probably have not been introduced to Latin by this point.” Anyway don’t make damn comments if you don’t know what you are talking about. That pisses me off more than if you just don’t know. Mike, seriously are you an idiot? You said that they are killing for their religion. Did you not pay attention or did someone drop you on your head when you were young. Hopefully the former but in any case; in the court room scene, Murphy McManus says, “Do not kill, do not rape, do not steal. These are principles which every man, of every faith can embrace.” They are not killing in the name of religion more so than they are killing to rid the world of evil. It just may have been obscure because albeit they are extremist, Roman Catholics(which by the way is the true Christian faith). Also, Dan seriously like Brecht said(the only person here who seems to be educated other than myself), when is the last time you ever heard a Russian speak Latin. Have you ever even heard Latin? Latin in my opinion is a beautiful language, though dead. Russian however is not so beautiful. Again on the subject of killing for the sake of religion, shut your ignorant mouths. If people are so ignorant as to group all Muslims together and say that they are love-hating and just wish to kill to satisfy themselves then we should just not listen to those people to begin with. Yes thousands of people did die in 9/11 but that does not mean that we can stereotype a religion, because that will only cause more problems. True Islam, not extremist misinterpretations, states that suicide is a sin and the Quran has a verse that states ,”And do not kill yourselves, surely Allah is most Merciful to you.”
If you don’t know what you are speaking about then hold your tongue. Well sorry if I offended anyone but you offended me by speaking so ignorantly! Also DaniB you listed Willem DeFoe’s name as “William”, that is his real name, and I applaud you for knowing that.(unless of course you did it by mistake)

Fili= Son, spiritu= divine, or poetic inspiration, and snacti= 1. of deities or distinguished men. 2.holy, blameless, virtuous. 3.venerable, holy, divine.
All of the preceding definitions are taken from English to Latin and Lation to English translation dictionaries…
I hope they help people understand the full definitions of the words.

Ok, so I’ve been going over this blog for a couple of days now, and I’ve seen some recurring questions so and I decided to do some research…
As For the tattoos that the brothers have on their hands, Aequitas is translated to “Unifomity, symmetry, impartiality, or equinimity, equity, fairness and justice”.
Veritas is translated to “Truth, truthfulness, the real facts, honesty, integrity, correctness”.
As for the end of the brothers family prayer “E. nomini patri, et Fili e spiritu sancti” , E.nomini translates to “name, or in the name of”, patri= “father, or fatherly

I agree with ‘Mike1.’

The whole idea of morality in this movie is based off the the popular ideals of the western world. And while I agree that the men in the movie who were slaughtered deserved their punishment, I must ask the question: is what I believe right? And moreover, is it right for me to pass judgement outside of an established set of rules? (I intend the word ‘me’ to mean a person or persons, or in this context, the two brothers).

mark you had said, “I think the main message was that they were trying to make a difference in the world by exacting revenge on those who deserved it. The main focus being the rapists, murderes and basic scumbags of the earth, that is slightly different than ramming a plane into a building.”

The problem is, if everyone tried to ‘make a difference’ by ‘exacting revenge’ on those they felt deserved it, then there would be no order, infact it would be chaos. A society is only as good as the rules that govern it, and the people that adhere to the rules. Do you not realize that differing parts of the world with differing background religions and differing social groupings have differing moral veiws? Do you not realize that the terrorists to us during the 9/11 attacks thought us to be the terrorists to them; thought us to be the murderers, scumbags and rapists deserving moral justice? Do you not realize that there is no True ‘right or wrong’ but a societal veiwpoint based off of that societies history?

What I’m saying is, the point of this movie was not about wreckless revenge, but more of a ploy to pointing out the follies of a society where drug peddlers, child rapers and psychopaths run free and unchecked. Its a look at the current set of governing rules that are in place and more so a challenge of those rules… a challenge for change.

right and wrong are both highly subjective, infact subjective to the core. it is the nature of their being. who’s to say that what you think is right is really right, or what i think is right is really right, or for anyone? none but a governing, agreed up body… unless you believe in that whole god thing.

o this movie was the best and if it wasnt for one of my dads work osotiates i wouldnt no about theis movie.
