Star Trek Cast

I have not been this excited about a Star Trek movie since the First Contact movie back in 1996. I am a huge fan of The Next Generation because of Jean Luc Picard, my favorite captain. Before you start telling me how much better the other captains are and get all trekkie on me, let me just say that I got to watch TNG every week as it came out and not via re-runs. I did watch the original but I was more of a bystander while someone else in my house watched it. My favorite character was Spock because well, vulcans are cool galactic elfs. What makes the new movie more interesting is its cast, they are not main stream actors but I am sure you have seen them on other stuff. So lets take a look at who will be boarding the USS Enterprise.

TV Quick Thoughts

- I miss Isaiah Washington in Grey’s Anatomy. Nothing against gay people, but George is one of the most annoying characters on TV and I would have been happier if he was gone instead of Burke.

– Trent Green made a bonehead play and watching it was painful but what Johnson said afterwards was just uncalled for.

– Bionic woman is not as bad as I thought after the first show, it is also not as good as I had expected… glad to see Isaac Washington, hopefully there are no late lesbians on the show.

– Heroes is not picking up the pace. I get that Hiro wants the girl… I get that Peter is going to fall in love with the Irish chick… I get that human gecko is getting together with the boy that can fly… lets get Sylar out of the jungle and bring on the pain, I don`t want to get into another soap opera, I am already addicted to Gilmore Girl reruns.

– The Soup is the best darn show on TV.

– I am going to scream if I see another news about what Britney did or did not do.

– Cane is an awesome show. If you are not watching it already, start this Tuesday.

– Moonlight is not quite Blade, not quite Forever Knight, a little too Buffy for my taste.

– It is getting a lot easier to get anime on TV now a days, huge plus.

– How I Met Your Mother is still funny.

– The Unit is still delivering the most thrill, best show so far this season.

– Ugly Betty is still funny, but not sure it kept the momentum of last season.

– Damages truly keeps you wanting to see the next episode, watch it and get hooked.

– I still have not watched Ramsey’s Kitchen!!!

How to find a Wii

buy at
It was very hard to find a Wii, but once the quest was over it was very much worth it. While it seems simple enough to get one, supply has been running low and demand has gone way up after a successful holiday season.

How did I get mine? I picked it up at GameStop. After several attempts at just going to the stores and not finding one even after I was told they were getting shipments, I decided to always call ahead. Funny thing is the that store that said they had one sold out on the 15 minutes it took me to drive there. Thankfully another store close by had one left and I made my purchase.

The wii is Amazon’s best selling video game console right now, and if I did not want the hassle that is where I would get it. If you do want to do some of the leg work you can use Yahoo find a wii site. Probably the best and cheapest way is to just call around your local retailers and wait for their next shipment.

When you pick up the console be sure to get some Wii points so you can enjoy some Virtual Console games. You only need those if you do not want to enter your CC information into the Wii. Must haves for everyone should be Super Mario Brothers 3 and Super Mario 64. Also pick up Wii Play which comes bundle with an extra controller. And do not forget the Nunchuk for both controllers, they are a must have for most games.

Do not, and I repeat, Do not get the classic controller. I bought two of them and have not used them once. Most virtual console games will accept GameCube controllers and if you do not have a GameCube you can always go back and experience the great catalog of games for that system on the Wii. Yes it is backwards compatible. The best choice for a controller is a wavebird for the GameCube, the first truly great wireless controller.

One that that I have not picked up but want to is the Nyko Wii Charge Station so you don’t have to recharge or buy batteries for your controllers. Batteries do last a long time. The cook thing about the Nyko system is that it replaces the OEM cover with one that is rubberized and makes it easier to grip the controller. Right now we are using rubber gloves for that purpose, those even come glow in the dark which is kind of cool.

The must have games for the Wii for me are the following.

buy at
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Not a game for just fans of the series, as a launch title this game shows us how the Wii is capable not just of beautiful graphics but extraordinary innovative game play. It is not a short game and the story is full of exiting twists and turns.

buy at
Rayman Raving Rabbids

The second title of this new series will be out soon, but I still think this is the best party game I have ever played. The music stages and the memory one alone make this game a must have.

buy at
Mario Strikers Charged

Second game to have online play is sure to make some of the critics shut up about the wii online experience.

So stop waiting to pick one up and join the world on experiencing the greatest console ever.

The Simpsons Movie (****)

Spider Pig, Spider Pig, made about 72 Mil. While I do not want to ruin this movie for anyone, I really want to… I want to talk about every single piece of hilarious comedy so that someone can tell me if I have missed anything.

The Simpsons are an institution now, they are even the subject of college courses. The same way some kids grew up with Harry Potter, I grew up with Bart. I do agree that the wizard is a lot cooler than the underachiever, but Bart is a lot funnier and his first full frontal is pure hilarity.

There was a lot of political statements and the humor was better than Family Guy but did not need to be over the top. It really captured the old feeling of watching The Simpsons when I was a lot younger. Bea reviewed the movie too, go see what she had to say. We went to the theater with some friends and then enjoyed some sushi and gellato :)

You need to go out and see this movie this week before people ruin it for you. Nobody dies on this one… or do they?

Harry Potter 7

buy at

I started reading Harry Potter sometime in 1999. Once I had picked up the series I started to wait for the books to be released. Prisoner of Azkaban was always my favorite and I almost stop reading the series after Order of the Phoenix came out. I had become very attached to the characters and seeing die such an early death in the series felt like I was being cheated.

The third time I read the Order of the phoenix I had already read the Half Blood Price and the story seemed to be a little better. The book made a little more sense and the death was something that I was able to deal with. It was almost destiny that every single father figure Harry ever had was destined to leave the series in one way or another.

I am not going to spoil book seven for you, so don’t be scared to read if you have not finished. I will even go as far as saying that this book stands on its own. It is a great read even if you did not read the whole series. I am also glad to say that Rowling puts the whole Snape is good or bad controversy to rest.

Come to think of it, the gift that she has is that she did an excellent job at closing all the circles she opened through the story. I think re-reading the whole series now that I know everything that happens will only make me cherish the build up even more. She created a world that while not completely out of her imagination, she does borrow from mythology and other great authors, it is her own interpretation of what a magical world should be. It is fresh and very unique, it has its own rules.

I remember the whole controversy over the book corrupting people because it was about evil and witchcraft. I know think back and see that the same message that the new testament tries to give all of us, that it all comes down to love, its the same in Harry Potter.

If you have only followed the movies, I assure you, you are missing out. The books paint a picture that the movies can only reproduce like a masterpiece made into a stamp. Every book in the series tells a tale that when put together makes a lot of sense. It is not just a story about grief, sacrifice, responsibility and courage, but also friendship, family and love.

I am glad that the series ended now that I read the last book. I was a little skeptic as to how so much build up could end in just seven hundred and some pages. It did, it satisfied my craving and made me part of the generation that read Harry Potter when it first came out.
