Caliente Closed

My favorite spot in KC is now closed. The wife and I noticed that they were closed last time we were at the legends, but we hoped it was only a temporary thing. I loved Caliente because it had excellent food and you could dance to good music by resident DJ Jalapeno, who happens to be someone I actually know. I did get the feeling that the place was not being wisely managed because the bartenders were on the rude side. That told me that management was never really around to control or take care of that.

Here is the information I found thanks to the Kansas City Star:

Now the new CalienteCuban Restaurant is in trouble.

Legends of KC, the legal name of the Legends at Village West complex at Interstate 435 and State Avenue in Kansas City, Kan., has sued the Caliente Legends company, plus Kerry Duffin, Herman Duffin, Darin Duffin, Peter Castillo and Thomas Gray, in Wyandotte County

The Legends says Caliente, which opened July 25, has not paid rent since July 22, the commencement date of the lease.

On Nov. 14 the Legends told Caliente to leave if rents weren’t paid by Nov. 17. Caliente has refused, according to the lawsuit, and the Legends puts its damages at $99,975 as of Nov. 14, with costs and damages accruing. It also is asking for legal expenses.

Kerry Duffin referred calls to his attorney, who did not return phone calls.

Caliente has other legal troubles. Numerous liens have been filed against the company. The lawsuit mentions several: Arrowhead Drywall Supplies for $13,271 (but Arrowhead said it received $4,000 of that this summer); American Fire Sprinkler Corp. for $30,314; Desco Coatings Inc. for $7,784; and DMA Electric Inc. for $124,793.

According to the Legends, the restaurant’s last operating date was Dec. 6. Customers concerned about holiday parties scheduled at the restaurant and who cannot reach Caliente management can call Legends management at 913-788-3700.

It is a shame the place closed, but I could almost see it coming. That area of the legends already has enough restaurants, and with two other Spanish places opening right next door it was going to spell tough competition. The sad part is that most people never realized what being a Cuban restaurant meant and kept on trying to get chips and salsa. I guess I am going to have to find another place to get some good “ropa vieja” sandwiches at and where to get my salsa on… but it will probably not be in the same building. Their my space says that they are coming to KCMO, but that remains to be seen.

What to give?

For the last couple of days I have been thinking about what to give in this holiday season. People need hope, perspective, love and understanding but most are going to get the latest gadget or toy.

I love to give advice to others, but it is hard at times to stick to my own advice. I do try to take my own advice and lately I have been trying hard to not take things personally. I have actually more and more finding that having faith helps with keeping me calm, and staying calm helps me have perspective in my life.

Watching the movie Love Actually yesterday for the first time also gave me some perspective. Love is something that is ever so present but at times we either take it for granted or don’t nourish it. We need to tell those around us that we love them, that they matter and most of all that without them our life would not be as happy.

Do not fight with anyone during this season, the stress level is way up and old issues are not going to be resolved in one night. Try to maybe have dialogue with that person before you have to see them in a group dynamic. Don’t drink or eat too much, you will regret it.

You also have to love yourself, it is important to feed your own ego and not depend on others to do so. Counting your blessings can always help on this. This is the time of year where most start to make plans for the following year, why not instead look at what you accomplished on the year that just passed.

Admit your mistakes and correct what did not work. If one of your behaviours keeps on hurting you, or those around you start working towards eliminating it from your life. Why make the same mistake simply because it is a learned behaviour that you seem to have always done. You have the capability for change, exercise it.

Most of all, believe in something bigger than yourself. Family, friends, or even God. I know not everyone is spiritual, but if you think you know everything or control everything you are a fool. You are also carrying a load that you do not need to. Apply the saying that you have heard and make sense… and simply change those things you can, and accepts those you cannot.

This little post is my gift to you in this season… to those like me, Merry Christmas… to the rest, Happy Holidays and to all best wishes.

Acused of something you did not do

One of the reasons I started reading Daniel’s blog is because of the spotlight he shone at the West Memphis Three. The case has moved people and most that hear the story will really be amazed that someone can be accused of murder for simply looking the wrong way or listening to the wrong music.

What people say about you has a lot of power. Not only can it affect the way you view yourself to some degree, but even when you do not hear it, others around you will form opinions of who you are based on someone else’s thoughts. While my experience with this does not come close to being accused of murder, I did end up having to lose a job in the past because of other’s perceptions that made my life at the place not as good. When someone trows the “not a team player” card into the mix simply because of jealousy, it can really affect you if you do not have a chance to defend yourself.

There is now DNA evidence that could reopen the case and finally set these 3 guys free. I could write out the whole story here, but I believe it has been already better articulated elsewhere. There is even a movie called Paradise Lost. Larry King also featured Echols on his show recently. I am not telling you to pick this up as a cause, but it is something scary to even consider. You never know how you might be able to help.

I am tagging all the Friday Feasters that are hungry for a meme!

Oh Noes! Britney’s Sister is Preggers!

I am so tired of people being called role models… just because someone is on TV it does not make them role models. The media is so two faced about the whole thing too, they are the one actually telling everyone that the girl is pregnant.

We live in a TMZ crazed society where even our kids are more interested about what celebrities are doing than who is going to be the next president of the country.

I personally say, who cares if she is pregnant or not… isn’t she an actress… the actors from when I was growing up had drug problems and even worse, but I did not find out until the True Hollywood story. I guess they ran out of material for that so instead of waiting until the person either crashes or redeems themselves we want the play by play.

Our addiction with celebrity voyeurism probably started when OJ’s chase was on TV and then the following trial… but I seriously think we need to just go to rehab and stop caring about what those people do with their lives. In the end, who cares… if you are not a mentor to your kid and chose to have the TV as a babysitter… turn off the TV and don’t expect Nickelodeon or any network to make the parenting decisions for you.
