It's amazing how a celebration of a good harvest has beome the devil's excuse to run amuck. Nothing wrong with giving thanks as the Celts.

<i>"There is no harm to celebrating the abundance God has given to us"</i>

Amen, Michael! Such as the abundance of sugary treats God has granted us!

A minister friend of mine told me this story. He was at a meeting with a large group of various demonimations and talking about a Halloween party we'd celebrated at the Wesley Foundation. One girl got very upset with him and went, "But that is a pagan holiday!" He responded, "Yes, but the way we celebrate Easter also follows many pagan traditions."

The thing is--back in the day, the church realized that they were better served to acknowledge and incorporate certain aspects of things in their celebration of holidays. And they did that...to reach out to the people who celebrated them. They could feel comfortable because they weren't being judged and things were familiar.

I don't mind a church having a trunk or treat or something like that. I do get annoyed when they churches get up on their pious high horse and have these events to scare people into believing. It says in the Bible to be of the world, but not transformed by it. There is no harm in letting small children dress up and trick or treat for candy. There is no harm to celebrating the abundance God has given to us at church during this time of year. There is no harm in teaching children the reality that Satan is real and out to keep them from a relationshp with God. But to scare them into a relationship...I don't see that working long term. Once the fear wears off, if there's no love there, what's left?
