Star Trek Cast

I have not been this excited about a Star Trek movie since the First Contact movie back in 1996. I am a huge fan of The Next Generation because of Jean Luc Picard, my favorite captain. Before you start telling me how much better the other captains are and get all trekkie on me, let me just say that I got to watch TNG every week as it came out and not via re-runs. I did watch the original but I was more of a bystander while someone else in my house watched it. My favorite character was Spock because well, vulcans are cool galactic elfs. What makes the new movie more interesting is its cast, they are not main stream actors but I am sure you have seen them on other stuff. So lets take a look at who will be boarding the USS Enterprise.

Zachary Quinto

Zachary Quinto comes to us fresh from the TV show Heroes to play the lovable Vulcan. You might have also seen him in the past in CSI, Charmed or 24. He is an excellent actor and will have no problem playing a Vulcan. His current character in Heroes has been very demanding and he has done it well. I look forward to him being the star of this movie.

Simon Pegg

Simon Pegg Will be responding to the “beam me up” phrase that we all know and love. If you have not seen Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead you need take a trip to the rental store or add it to your online rental queue right now. You might have also seen him on MI III or Dr Who. (If you don`t know what Dr Who is ask a guy named Big Orange Michael.)

Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana is going to be playing Uhura. She was not one of my favorite characters on the original since I though she lacked depth and ass kicking, but Saldana is another great actor. I first noticed Saldana on one of my favorite movies, Center Stage. She has been in several movies and will do a great job on the movie.

Eric Bana

Eric Bana who I frankly don’t think too much of, the only movie where I stomached him was Munich, is going to be the villain Nero in the movie.

Chris Pine is said to be the ripping his shirt captain that Shatner made famous.

John Cho

John Cho from Harold and Kumar go to White Castle might be playing Sulu. Another connection with Heroes is that George Takei the original Sulu plays Kaito Nakamura.

Here is a picture of the original cast if you need a reminder of what they all looked like :)

  1. I am cautiously optimistic.

My biggest concern is the casting. The actors are so synonymous with the roles when it comes to classic Star Trek. I am having a hard time seeing anyone but Shatner as Kirk and anyone but Nimoy as Spock.

I hope they can do it….

Either way, I’ll be there opening day.

  2. I’m grateful for TOS, after all, without it, we wouldn’t have gotten TNG and the other “modern” Treks, but I didn’t think it was all that spectacular. Certainly nothing to make new movies about… AND WITH A NEW CAST, TOO?!

New Trek movies should be modern… done with TNG crew? Move on to DS9 and Voyager or how about Captain Riker and his crew on the Titan?

  3. I’d love to see a new Trek movie…But as I said ‘NEW’. I just can’t see remaking the old with new actors. Better yet, a new TNG with the same cast (as already said).

  4. I’m very excited about this movie. As far as plot an action are concerned I agree that some episodes of TOS weren’t the best (though others are classics! :)) but many years back, it was a real inovation. And one of the major reason why people got hooked pretty bad on Star Trek at the start was that they loved the characters and related to them (my father said he and his brother cried like a baby when Spock “died”). And also because of the relationships between the characters. There was a very deep bond between Kirk/Spock/McCoy (NOT slash guys! :P) that evolved slowly and it left its mark on a lot of people (me included). I know a lot of people told me they eventually disconnected because they thought that’s what the other ST series lacked… a kind of emotional resonance… Now don’t flame me, I’m not saying it’s better, it’s just a matter of opinion and taste, dependind on what you like the most about ST.

As for the actors, I guess they sound good for the parts (I saw a picture on google of Quinto as Spock and OMG he’s perfect -physically speaking-) But I agree with some of you. It’s kinda scary to have new faces play such…legends! It won’t be the same. But if they play their part well, I guess we could get used to it and eventually forget that it’s different actors. I think it’s going to take some time to get used to the idea though, at least in my case.
