What is it with today’s world? Is respect a thing of the past? Where is trust and integrity? Did it all die along with good manners?

I have worked with so called “Professionals” who’s only purpose is to look good themselves and get ahead, to shine even if everyone around them is getting smeared with the excrement they leave behind. Why is it that there is no ethics on my line of work?

I bet that firefighters do not take away hoses from each other’s hand if the boss is coming around just so they look like they were the ones putting out the fire. If a snake expert tells you that a baby snake can still kill you would you go and challenge his knowledge because you read in a book that they don’t?

I try to know as much about every topic there is. I used to be a lot less careful with my opinions, but in my later years I preface things I say with, “I think,” “I am not sure of but”; so that when I make a statement I am sure about people around me will listen. How do you deal with someone that repeatedly tries to undermine your authority? How do you deal with someone that is constantly trying to undermine your statements? How can someone truly not listen to anything you have to say but rather their interpretation of what you say.

I had a counselor once teach me an exercise on communication. It works like this, after someone says something the other person repeats what you just said. It is amazing that a lot of times what the other person hears is different than what you want to say. I did not think that this would apply to technical instructions to other people but it seems like it does. I might have to start using that method and as ridiculous as it sounds it might be necessary to accomplish the task. I am so tired of people having no integrity anymore. Enough ranting!

  1. I tend to repeat things people say to me anyway. I want to make sure I get it right the first time. I can’t help but be respectful to the people I work with. I guess I was just brought up that way.

  2. I have to admit that my peeve is when someone repeats what you said about five minutes ago, but as their own idea or revelation. I guess I’m having a hard time offering a suggestion without a specific example, but sometimes my reaction depends on the seniority of the other person, too.

  3. I think part of them problem is the high expectations associated with integrity within the work place are just not worth a lot of people’s trouble.

Now, as far as how to deal with people who constantly try to undermine your authority . . . let them. Be the bigger person. Kill them with kindness, but be firm in your resolve.
