I have mentioned my interest on ASL from the beginning of the blog. Then I started taking the class. It is almost coming to an end. I have now completed one of the biggest assignments for this class, which was a reaction paper to the movie. I also mentioned the movie here on the blog, that caused a little bit of controversy. I will now post my paper and feel free to comment on my opinions, but please inform you in the subject before making any harsh remarks. This time they will not be tolerated.
Since 1997 I have had a personal website. As soon as I figured some HTML I started modifying it and putting different information on it. For a while it has a Simpson’s theme, then it moved onto NES roms and other various iterations. About a couple of years ago I started toying with the idea of keeping a journal. At first it was in the form of a news page where I would post different events. It never went beyond that because work and life just never gave me the time to really develop something easy to use, and that it would not take too much time out of my busy day to update.
Then I started hearing about blogs, a new kind of personal website that sometime used content management systems for its daily updates. Eventually I discovered a couple of blogs that I liked and was reading in a regular basis. The last two things that had to happen was, first finding wordpress, the software that I use for my blog and buying my own domain.
Tuesday Merriam-Webster’s announced its list of the 10 words of the year. Guess what number one was. Blog. It defines it as “a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments and often hyperlinks,” which its pretty close to what I would define the blog part of my website.
I think blogs are the new media, I think they are going to play an important place in society going forwards. It can already be seen by the impact that blogs had on the election we just had. But a blog to me is a lot more than that. It has been my better than therapy instrument for coping with life. It has also helped me develop my skills as a writer. They are not what they need to be yet, but hey practice makes perfect, right.
