I am not the hugest MTV fan, but I do watch the channel from time to time and enjoy some of its programming. A new series called My life (Translated) just started, and I got to catch the second episode which talked a lot about the eyelid surgery. I had to see SuChin Pak‘s point of view of the issue from the Korean-American side. It was a very good show, and if you have the opportunity to watch a rerun of it, do. It illustrated how the decision is not an easy one, but the pressure from the culture is there. Also how difficult it is to explain to people outside the culture.
My opinion is simple; I think Asian women are beautiful and that their eyes are gorgeous without the fold. I also think that they have the right to change their appearance as they see fit, but it should be their decision and not something they do just because of pressure by the culture. But that said I understand the pressure, I get a lot of that pressure in other issues from my culture. Is surgery too drastic of a measure? Well I am not sure; I am not in the situation. I just want to make sure that people understand that other cultures have to deal with some serious issues and we should all be open minded. First learn about the issue and culture before giving our opinions on it.
