Angels and Demons – Dan Brown

I just finished this exceptional book and all I can say is WOW. I would probably tell people that read the DaVinci code and enjoyed it that, this is a must read. If you have read neither book start with this one for sure.

The character of Robert Langdon is just extremely multifaceted. It has the characteristics or almost an anti-hero mixed with victim and hey he seems to… well do not want to really reveal too much. The book discusses the topic of science vs religion quite a bit, but makes a wonderful case as to why they really do not have to be at war, but could complement each other.

I would urge you to go and purchase this book asap. If you enjoyed watching any of the Indiana Jones movies, this book will appeal to you for sure.

Helping others

“Help a man against his will and you do the same as murder him.”
-Horace

Beatriz, who by the way has the same middle name as my Mom Eugenia, was kind enough to post a link to my site and another Colombian blogger. I went and visited Fabian Rodriguez’s site, and found a very interesting post. He talks about how we sometimes help others but they take it for granted. That made me look online for famous quotes about helping others.

Horace in his quote says something that seems extreme, but it is very true. We need to learn that in relationships with other people helping is actually complicated. Help for the most part is provided when someone asks for it, or at least it should be that way. But sometimes people just try to help others even when those people did not even as. This is often misconstruted into a negative thing… or maybe not even misconstruted but it is really a negative thing. I have been a victim of that giving plenty of unwanted advice, and trying to “help” others when they did not even ask.

I guess it is all a matter of growing as a person and realizing that people if they need help, they will ask for it. No matter how compelled I feel to help someone now, I now wait until they actually want my help.

Now back to the post by Fabian. He pointed towards an article that is in Spanish but in a very humorous way pokes fun at the pitfall that many of us computer geeks fall into. Helping a friend or family member buy a computer… which instantly makes us their primary tech support. I have now solved must of that problem by pointing them to Dell… they have the Dell dude and their own tech support.

Compromise

Webster Online Dictionary defines this word as

1 a : settlement of differences by arbitration or by consent reached by mutual concessions b : something intermediate between or blending qualities of two different things
2 : a concession to something derogatory or prejudicial a compromise of principles

But what does compromise mean? well for a long time I thought that compromise was letting someone else win or letting that other person win… but the reality is that the word means a lot more than just that. Compromise is really coming to a middle ground, understanding the other person’s position and then agreeying to disagree but at the same time coming to some middle grownd.

During high school I was part of a conflict resolution team that was formed, and even though we did not exercise it much, it was supposed to stop or mediate conflict between students by students. Kind of a peer mediation thing. I think a lot of people confuse compromise, and I now wish I had the understanding of the word I do now back then.

I think the key to compromise is that both parties involved in the situation have to feel like they got a fair share. Compromise is not about taking someone elses position or point of view, or changing yours in any way… is about coming up with a creative way to solve the problem so both parties feel equal in the end.

Maroon 5

Ok, if you have not heard of this band (specially if you listen to radio in the US) you have been living under a rock. Marron 5 is very classic rock with a pop feel to it. Some of their songs are more pop than rock like Tangled and Harder To Breath. It is rare than I like more than 2 songs in a CD but this CD is good from begining to end. Some of the songs took a couple of listenings to really like, but afterwards is a put on the player and let it go.

The band has a very decent website, and you can listen to some of the songs right from their nav bar. Also the lyrics are superior to what we have been getting out of mainstream acts. I give it the thumbs up and a definate buy.
