Starring: Willem Dafoe(Paul Smecker), Sean Patrick Flanery(Connor MacManus), Norman Reedus(Murphy MacManus), David Della Rocco(David Della ‘Roc/Funny Man’ Rocco), Billy Connolly(Il Duce).

Most of you know how much I love movies… but it is actually rare that I can watch a movie over and over. Most movies to me lose some of their appeal after the first time you watch them. But Boodock Saints is going to make me not only chance my top five list, but also might just make the number one spot.

I watched this movie for the first time on Friday night and I have now watched it 4 times since then. If you have not watched the movie do so now… I do not want to ruin the plot too much because it is very simple. I am not sure why it did not make in into theaters; maybe it is the strong subject or that inability for people to deal with some facets of life, who knows.

I first heard about this movie from Jen one of my martial arts friends… but put it in the back of my head and did not rent it… this week Bogi made it a point to get it and we watched it… and since then I have been hooked. AEQUITAS - VERITAS. Dam I want a new tattoo now. It was actually funny cuz my friend Jen just got one this weekend… and on top of that she knows 12 other people that have gotten tattoos from the movie. Crazy, maybe a little but the movie is just that cool.

I love it when I run across someone who has seen Boodock Saints for the first time. When my brother made me watch it one day I was blown away. It’s great to see other people get the same reaction. I often wonder why I had never heard of it before. It’s a textbook cult classic.

Boondock Saints didn’t make it to the theatre because it was supposed to be released almost a week after the Columbine shootings. and blah blah blah violence and kids and politics.

the reason that the movie didnt come out in theaters is because the release date was just weeks after the columbine highschool insident. so thee fcc would not let them air it in theaters. I saw the movie some years ago. i god damn love that movie. read some reviews and wanted to kill the guys who wrote them that movie will never get old. I can recite it begginning to end and i still love to whatch it

“ok all of your posers do you even know what aequitas veritas means please do tell ”

The loose translation for the movie would be truth & justice. Another reason the movie was never released is that Troy Duffy got on the Miramax shit list, and they wouldnt allow any other group to release the movies either. It was only later when Blockbuster released it that it started gaining cult status here in the US.

it is by far the best movie ever made. the truth and justice tattoos are awesome( veritas and aequitas) my brothers got them tattooed on their backs when they turned 18 about 6 years age along with saint patricks prayer.

i don’t understand it’s latin why not use gaelic old irish???anyone?

  14. lojack
    29 Jan 05

Jory, correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe a more accurate translation for aequitas is “equality”, not “justice;” justice is “justitia.” I actually thought the placing of the latin tattoos was very well done; having “equality” on a trigger finger (a more elegant take on “peace through superior firepower”). I think for this purpose, justita would have been more appropriate than veritas for the other brother, but oh well.

irishblood, as to why the wording’s in latin and not gaelic, my guess is there’s two logical reasons behind it:

    1) The brothers are Catholic. Catholics still use latin in mass
    2) More of the viewing audience would recognize “veritas” over “frinne”.

    Take it easy.

  15. irishblood
    02 Feb 05

well on a latin translation page aequitas stand for justice or fairness smart guy ..but being oh well latin is more trendy thats cool better than making gaelic trendy i have several tattoos that are in gaelic wording so thats fine with me stupid trendy people that get tattoos because of a movie or band they make me sick like that stupid godsmack sun or barbwire arm bands or tribal tattoos of any kind oooohh that looks cool yea howabout being origianal for once stop being sheep and following the herd for fuck sake…

it was a good movie. but people that get the EXACT same tattoo from the movie…thats just lame. Get original. And Im tired of people reciting the family prayer like its there own. Gte your own damn family prayer. I hate the after effect of a movie, exalting another life which you wish you had in some wierd way. Get a life. Represent your own family well.

What a masterpiece we have here! The whole idea of this movie simply amazes me. It has ‘genius’ written all over it. One of the most amazing elments of the film has to be the bond between Connor & Murph, it’s such a great thing to watch. Aw geez I love this movie, it’s flawless.

Your insane…..You obviously must have liked the movie to be searching for a thread about the movie at 11:56 pm. The Boondock Saints is by far one of the best movie made. Perfect actors, story line, everything. It deserves alot more recognition and popularity than it has.

Boondock Saints is one of those movies that several people with different viewpoints can watch and say “That was friggin awesome!!!” A tatto of aequitas and veritas might just well be the coolest thing in my book. As for those just seeing it for the first time, any other time is just as good whether its your 100th time or not.

I Seen Boondock Saints for the first time 2 years ago since then ive seen it about 100 times. Its one of the the most uder appreciated films of our generation. And its a great movie. Adn to the guy that said getting tattoos because of bands and movies, Fuck You!

    07 Apr 05

by the way, guy who wrote comment #19, “follow the herd?!” sheep wander aimlessly unless there is a sheep dog to scare them into going where they need to go. I don’t think anyone was scared into thinking certain tattoos were cool. wtf, mate? maybe you were thinking of lemmings. But i forgive you, don’t worry. You obviously don’t know how to use punctuation marks either, so i can’t expect you to know how certain animals react in certain circumstances. have a nice, boring tattood life. Who gives a fuck anyway what other people put on their bodies? It’s their choice. If they want to copy someone else, that’s a pretty fucking cool compliment. a pretty perminant compliment on their body.

  39. Sean
    09 Apr 05

I first saw Boondock Saints in 2000, it is now 2005 and i purchased it recently. It is in my opinnion one of the best movies I have ever seen. now i’m not good with names so Willem Dafoe was the only actor I could put a name to. However, the brothers in that movie with Justice (Aequitas) and Truth (Veritas… correct me on this i’f i’m wrong) Tattooed on their trigger fingers really interested me, so i hopped on the computer and searched for the meanings of these words. I would like to thank the person who posted #15, Jory. I will certainly be getting these tattoos… probly on my fingers just like in the movie.

Actually it was released in theatres. Just not in The U.S It was released over in europe and places like that. Also it was the worlds largest cinematic breast ever. Heh, who would have thought that if boondock saints broke a record it would be that? anway great movie i’ve seen it over 25 times. I usually have some movie running in my DvD player all the time more recently its been boondock saints so i can share it with everyone. :)

They’re working in a “friggin meat packing plant” to make it more realistic. Honestly, how many people do you know that could see that much blood and that much gore up close and personal, and touching the dead bodies without getting atleast the slightest bit queasy. Either ex-marines from vietnam who fought on hamburger hill (the bloodiest battle in the last 50 years), or a couple a guys who have worked at a meat packing plant, covered in blood, willing to beat each other with cow tongues and other bloodied animal parts. And then just laugh about it. This movie was very well thought out like that. People keep griping about how lame it is, and how unbelievable it is. That may be, the story may not be realistic, it IS a movie. But it was believable in teh sense that, if you believe certain aspects of the movie as they appear, then the whole thing is amazingly real. If they really did get a message from God, then they would haev easily been caught by their feet, dangling while spinning, giving them the perfect opportunity to kill everyone in the room. Things just worked out so perfectly, adn they made a note of it, (”this james bond bullshit never happens in real life. You know who is to blame for this? Bad television!”) Its just so wonderfully well thought out.

Wow I was really interested in all of your comments, I agree with many but some however i did not. I have recently gotten the tattoo of the Virgin Mary which was on there neck on my chest and am also getting the cross and veritas and aequitas on my back. So to all who knock it, maybe you should stop analyzing what other people are doing and just live your life with no complaints and let truth and justice prevail. Oh ya the movie was stellar and i have recently purchased my copy, anyone looking for the soundtrack can find it at http://www.theboondocksaints.com.

Top quality film, anyone who says that the story line is not believable remeber it is only a movie for fucks sake!! Quality tat’s. I randomly saw this movie on TV and was instantly hooked. Saw it again then bought the DVD. Now my bro’ and all my mates have seen it and all agree it’s mint. Ever find yourself randomly quoting bits from the film?? “He gave me his c,c,c.. he gave me his c,c,c.. oh he fuckin’ gave me this. FUCK ARSE!” Love the Irish barman.

Saw the movie for the first time last december….and holy crap, what an awesome movie!!!! I had never heard of it, but some college friends of mine basically forced me to watch it, and I’m glad they did. Normally I dont bother with threads and shit like this, but felt the need to put in my 2 cents (not that anyone gives a damn.) For those of you going “omg the brothers are soooo hot!” thats pretty sad you probably missed the entire point of the movie drooling over them. Oh I admit they are very attractive, but its most likely their beliefs, how they project themselves and their actions that make them “soooo hawt!”. To each his own how you perceive the movie, I personally thought it was fucking awesome…reminds me alot of Dogma. The two movies have the same principles; random shit and paths in the name of religion. For the fuckwit up there bashing people with band/movie tattoos, has it not occurred to you had it not been for the bands/movies some people would not have been exposed to certain tattoos/tattoo stylings? So you see a cool symbol on a side of a bus, go and get it tattooed…maybe we should blame the public transportation system for introducing you to something you probably would not have otherwise seen. I mean, how awful is that permanently inking something you love into YOUR OWN skin. For the record, I have 2 Murderdolls logos tattooed on my back, so yeah I do know what the fuck I’m talking about. I actually discovered this movie from Bleeding Through’s cd This Is Love, This Is Murderous. Any boondock saints and/or metal fans should go check them out, the first track “Love Lost In A Hail Of Gunfire” starts out with Willem Dafoe’s line “It was a fuckin bomb…for a few seconds, this place was armeggedon. And there was a FIRE FIGHT!” As well as the prayer in another Bleeding Through song, although I forget which one. Anywho, I must say this movie will probably reach cult status, as well it deserves to.

first of all, this movie was so sick because it actuyally made me respect religion. I could go on if you make me, i’ve written a novel on how religion is bullshit and i’m a theologian so don’ try. anyway, quit being fucking retards and asking what verits and aequitas means, if you read one fucking comment on this whole page, it probably said it in there and you wouldn’t have to ask. sick movie, and for the dusche bag who said that he didn’t like it, then get off this fucking site and let us like it. anyway, this movie kicked ass. i bought it after the first time i saw it cuz it was so damn good. peace out. and always maintain the constitution to take it as far as is needed.

Ah yes, very good movie, happens to be one of my all time favourites ever since I saw it this past year finally…I picked it up in a pawn shop for 3 dollars on DVD in damn near perfect condition with the exception of a few scuffs on the case. Can’t beat that with a stick now can you?

E nomine patris et fili spiritus sancti means “In the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit/ghost”

Which is why they say it at the end of the prayer.

Boondock Saints is a frikken awesome movie…all other entries seem to have said it…an interesting aspect is how fine it cuts the line between justified and unjustified murder…of course it’s a pretty grisly tribute to God the Father–who by most accounts doesn’t support the murder of anyone, but it is a righteous murder to be sure…we could all take some good pages out of their books to become upstanding Christians (More specifically Catholics–>yes, we rock!{oh, bad pun says St. Peter!} groan.) fuck i am a shithead right now…oh well…Boondock Saints makes me extremely proud of my limited Irish Heritage…and that’s about all i’ve got to say!
    Cheers!

Hello everyone. Just wanted to say that I also am a huge fan of the movie and have forced other people to watch it. Always they are like “NO that dosen’t sound like the kind of movie for me” But after they see it, we all know what happens. God bless the Irish!

I agree with most people out there that this is an awesome movie. At least in my top five favorites. However I do find it a little bizarre (dont want to sound mean) that some people are now prouder of their religion then they were before watching the movie. And even though their tats were cool and all, there are better tattoos you can get, maybe like van Damme doing one of his kicks LOL.

THIS MOVIE ROCKS! PERIOD! i loved it! the entire thing, so well planned out and thought out, i love the deleted scenes! especially the one where “mom” calls home, they prolly took it out though becuase it was too funny and gave to much comedy to the movie, i love how they switch from the crime scene to the crime. My brother showed it to me, at first i didnt wanna watch it but after seeing it it is one of my favorites and ive watched it almost 10 times now, those prayers are great, and a great performance by all! ***** five stars!!!!

I really just wanted to clear something up. Someone mentioned that you could buy the soundtrack on the BDS official site, but you can’t. There is no soundtrack available for sale (though you can find it to download online if you look hard enough). The CD available at the official site is a CD of the BAND named The Boondock Saints, which includes Troy Duffy and his brother Taylor. However, two of the songs on the album are in the movie.

Other than that, awesome movie. Definitely one that has great repeat viewing ability. No, it’s not the greatest movie ever made, but it ranks very high on my list because it’s entertaining. And what else are movies created for but to entertain?

A great film. Such a great plot. I wish it were a documentary. I could go on as to how well shot the film is, the acting, the directing, but I think the biggest point of the film is it’s message. Not necessarily to kill those who do evil (although….), but that an even greater evil than evil men is those good men who are indifferent. Indifference is the true evil that needs to be overcome in this world. Standing by and watching, or worse, standing by and ignoring those evil deeds against the good of humanity that go unpunished or unprosecuted can not nor should not be tolerated. I hope that message is not lost in this great classic.

Great movie. Not to be missed. I must have watched it almost 30 times in the past 3 weeks or so since I “discovered” it. It has an addictive appeal to it. If you can’t find it in stores, try your local video rental store or amazon.com. From what I hear, the sequel is being held up because nobody in Hollywood wants to work with the writer/director Troy Duffy. But Duffy keeps promising it will come out… eventually.

To tell you the truth you guys, its pissing me off that hot topic is just starting to sell tee shirts and stuff and all these posers are buying them! i love it when this one man walks into work and he’s wearing his veritas aequitas shirt. i give him free food because he knows EVERYTHING about the movie, he’s not one of those posers! i can’t wait til next year for the new one to come out and im so mad that it was supposed to come out 2 months ago!

I loved this movie so much, I named My twin cats after them! They are born assassins, after all…
But anyways, the movie is My all time favorite, second to none. While it may be considered”dark comedy”, you cant help but like and identify with every main character in the movie. Too bad America missed out,but in some ways, we’re a little behind the times, and God forbid we send a message that its O.K to want to do away with bad people.Hell, we let ‘em out early!! sleep on that….

“According to the film’s official website, the release date of the sequel The Boondock Saints: All Saints Day was September 2005 (this didn’t happen, however). The sequel continues from the courtroom scene at the end of the first film. Industry insiders have long speculated that the actual production of this sequel is extremely unlikely considering that Troy Duffy has had no film directing or producing experience since 1999, and believe sequel rumors were being used as an attempt to promote the first film.

In late March of 2002, Duffy posted a letter to fans of the first film, claiming that financial backing had been found for a sequel. It would reportedly have twice the budget of the original film, and “experience a theatrical release.” Willem DaFoe will not be returning, according to the posted letter.

Information for the sequel was formerly available on IMDb, where it was catagorized as in development. However, as of February 2006 all information regarding the sequel has been removed from IMDb.”

Someone up previous noted that the Wal-Mart release edited out some of the violence- there were multiple releases of the film, the two US releases were both edited, as well as the original UK edition- later, an un-edited version came out in Japan, which i believe was later released in Europe, but I am not certain- this version was rated up to NC-17 from the R it was rated in the original release in the US.

I’m trying to remember the prayers, Neo, that Nightcrawler recited, but I thought he said the Our Father and perhaps the Hail Mary, but forgive me if my memory serves false.

A transcript of The Boondock Saints is available at the following link- yes, I know, there is no distinction between who speaks when and there is no plot detail- that is the difference between a transcript and a screenplay- unfortunately I cannot find the screenplay- anyone who can, I would be greatly appreciative if you could post the link on this thread.

Dr. Sandman, I believe that is part of La Boheme, but seeing as I have only seen the opera once, I am not one-hundred percent certain.

When they kill the mafia members in the hotel room, they say the same prayer as they do before killing Sal (I believe that was his name) in the courtroom.
The speech that the three men make in the courtroom is as follows (interjections are *ed* and I do not differentiate between speakers, seeing as I am taking this from the transcript and have not seen the film nearly as many times as I assume many of you have!

    —–

    You people have been chosen…
…to reveal our existence to the world.
You will witness what happens here today, and you will tell of it later.
    *All eyes to the front.*
*Now’s a good time to fucking do someth…*
    *Shut your fucking mouth!*
*You must watch dear, it will all be over soon.*
    Now you will recieve us.
We do not ask for your poor, or your hungry.
We do not want your tired and sick.
It is your corrupt we claim.
It is your evil that will be sucked by us.
With every breath we shall hunt them down.
Each day we will spill their blood till it rains down from the skies.
Do not kill! Do not rape! Do not steal!
These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace.
These are not polite suggestions. These are cause of behavior.
And those of you that ignore them will pay the dearest cost.
There are varying degrees of evil.
We urge you lesser forms of filth…
…not to push the bounds and cross over…
…into true corruption, into our domain.
    But if you do…
…one day you will look behind you and you will see we three.
And on that day you will repend!
And we will send you towards ever god, you wish.

And shepherds we shall be for Thee, my Lord, for Thee.
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand.
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee,
and teeming with souls shall it ever be.
    - In nomine Patris - Et Filii
    Et Spiritus Sancti.

I bought The Boondock Saints without having seen it before, I dont know, something about the cover and the plot on the back of the dvd caught my attention. When I watched it for the first time the movie really had an impact on me, the dialogue was so smart. It became my favorite movie right away, on top of movies like Scarface, Carlito’s Way, The Godfather. The movie is really that good, my favorite character has to be Rocco, “Shut your fat ass Rayvvie! I cant buy a pack of cigarretes without running into nine guys you’ve fucked!” Thats my favorite scene, Rocco fighting with his druggie girlfriend. If you havent seen the movie just buy the dvd and save the money youre going to spend renting it because you’ll want to see the movie everyday. I like inviting people over to watch the movie for the first time, just to see their reaction, everybody has loved the movie. I wish they would release it on theaters, the movie would make so much money.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about a timeline of the release of this film. I read earlier in the blog that it was never shown in theaters and someone was of the opinion that cult status was not achieved in the US until after the large scale video release of this movie (Blockbuster). If anyone has any information I would appreciate direction or advice. This inquiry is academic in nature but even wild theories could be beneficial.

Q: Timeline of the movies releases?
When was a large scale cult status achieved?

Correct me if im wrong but maybe aequitas and veritas might slightly be taken out of context. In roman mythology Aequitas is goddess of fairtrade and honest merchants, representing equity and balance. Veritas was the goddess of truth and a daughter of Saturn. I also recently saw the movie and it just blew me away!!!!!!!! It makes me think twice about how it would be taking matters into your own hands but being a catholic makes me think about the ten comandments with one in particular “thou shalt not kill”

alot of rumors about the film are not true, i saw it in sept, 99 in the theaters in spokane wa, i also read an email recently sent to me about how norman reedus would not agree to do the film because of contract problems.
just about six months ago it was under the filmography website as pre-production but has recently been taken off, wheather it has anything to do with actors or contracts i do not know, but i will voice my opion on the subject/”not making a new saints film would be devastating to those who have been waiting yrs for it, but it keeps the first one at all time great statuse” my opion MATT SPOKANE WA

so my late brother introduced me to this movie, it was his favorite, and it has become one of my favorites. and yes I am going to be adding onto my memorial tattoo for him with aequitas and veritas on either side of the cross I have for him, but that’s not just because of the movie, it’s because he lived his life like the brothers did, except without the shootings, he tried to make the world a better place up until his death. I find that this movie has a deep connection between me and him and by getting the tattoo I feel it will connect us more.

First time I was introduced to this movie, I loved it so much that I went all around looking for the DVD. Boondock Saints is one of those dark movies where it makes you question the whole but the movie did it with humour and it has such a great story line and ending. I loved it, I honestly don’t know how many times I’ve watched it. I’m not a religious person but after watching the movie I feel like I can connect to them somehow.

Thumbs up to those who has as much love as i do for this movie.

Second its not “It is your evil that will be sucked by us” it is “It is your evill that will be SOUGHT by us” how are they going to suck the evil?

Third its not “And on that day you will repend” it is And on that day you will REAP it!

Please make sure you quote this great movie correctly!

Dispatch: yes, it is latin. ;-) It’s pretty much where a lot of today’s catholic prayers originated (the Vatican, anyone?).

O’Brien: I’m a Pole, but I somehow relate to the guys in oh so many ways. And yes, I simply LOVE the way Irish people pronounce words… it’s so crisp, and yet requires a lot of processing to get it through your head… It’s the same with the old English language/dialect (? unsure) [in Polish it's "staroiangielski", if anyone can translate that]. Words like “yee”, “thou” etc. ;-)

The movie - simply no words to describe it. Anyone who has never seen it - go see it right now, and I can’t put it in any simplier manner. And while I’m at it, I’d like to recommend two more titles:

    I) The Usual Suspects - I like it because it puts Your brain to work, but it’s worth watching only once because after the great mystery is solved the answer’ll just carve itself at the back of your skull forever. ;-)

II) Crash - a very ambitious, and successfull, attempt to address various racial tensions in the US; what’s funny - it had to take an Australian guy to do it, so I guess someone’s trying to escape the truth here, like… sweep it under the rug? ^^’

    - and a quote from ‘Crash’, to get Ya started:
“In a real city, you walk, y’know? You brush past people, people bump into you… In LA, nobody touches you. We’re always behind this metal and glass… And we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other just to feel something…”

(The music that was used in the trailer for ‘Crash’ was Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for strings”, a slight variation of which was also used in the trailer for the game “Homeworld” [striking anybody as odd? anyone?] and seeing as I loved the game, I just HAD to hunt the movie down… all I can say is: well worth it. The movie played in our theaters about a month ago, titled “Miasto gniewu” ["The city of anger"]. And it is/was also surrounded by much hype and confusion, as it is the case with this movie.)

To all that are not Irish……………………Your tattoos you have so proudly have gotten………I hope you understand the full meaning………………………….Your playing with religeous belifes………..If there was a cool movie about Jesus would you tattoo him on your body if you are not of that religeon?……………….. Instead of looking up meanings of the words try reading history and the words will be all too clear to all that understand! Read up on the history of Irealand up until the start of the IRA……………….. if I have to explain you should not mark your body with things you know nothing about. Your playing with what you dont know about and some are real serious about what they believe……………..Oh yeah …..this is America…….where riligeous belifes are a freedom of choice and………………. dont have to be respected by others.?

Let’s be honest, this movie is not ‘the best’ it’s not ‘awesome’ UNLESS you’re irish. I couldn’t help but notice that most of the people that loved this film were either Irish or chicks who thought the brothers were hot. Why do Irish people feel the need to shove the fact that their Irish in everyone’s face?? It’s a thin line between Pride and Hubris. Think about it.

He pretty much burned all of his birdges making the first one. By now, it will be kinda hard to make a 2nd moive, but still plusable. Dont hold your breth thouhg, no one want to work with that guy anymore, and im a huge fan of Bonndocl Saints, and i made a drinking game outta it. The movie rocks, but the message trancends to another level. There are some who want to bring the ACTING into their reality. Have any of you people looked into the eyes of a person who wants to kill you.. its you or them.. you live they die.. and a bit of you does too. War has done this to me. The tats and soundtrack are excellent but please leave the truth and justice to the people we have elected (freely) to dispense it. There is always someone faster and a bit more crafty than you, take it from a guy with the scars (inside and out) Be safe, watch over each other trust in your form of GOD and find some good in all you attempt in life. But if you find your back against the wall, and it’s time for violence— be the nastiest, foul, unfeeling s.o.b. and do what you HAVE too do. Period. ONLY GOD SHALL JUDGE

  128. Lou
    30 Jan 07

After thinking about it, perhaps there are some people that have their truth and justice dispensed by people they have NOT elected to so. The IRISH come to mind…. my apologies Shaine. I cannot imagine a place where Catholics and Protestants would war on each other… Makes u think, Muslim vs Christians… (that’s happening) Methodists vs Lutherans… Mormans vs Judaism, powerful stuff, now, where’s my Guiness?
